CLAIMING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

  • Unemployment insurance provides benefits to unemployed workers, provided the worker meets certain criteria. There are new measures due to coronavirus, some of which include:

    • If you are quarantined and can’t work due to coronavirus

    • If you are permanently or temporarily laid off due to coronavirus measures.

  • To file an unemployment insurance claim by phone, call: 1-877-644-6562.

GETTING GOVERNMENT ID

Social Security Card (required for getting the COVID-19 stimulus check from the IRS)

  • If you have previously had a Social Security Card and need a replacement:

    • Must provide evidence of your identity with the following:

      • US Driver’s license

      • US state-issued non-driver ID card

      • US passport

    • If you do not have any of these forms of ID, you can use:

      • School ID/Record

      • Medicaid Card

      • Health insurance card

      • Medical record

      • Employee ID card

      • US military ID card

      • Certificate of naturalization

  • If you need to apply for a new social security card (For US-born Adults):

    • Must provide evidence of age with a birth certificate if one exists. If you do not have a birth certificate, the following may be acceptable:

      • Religious record made before the age of 5 showing your date of birth

      • US hospital record of your birth

      • US passport 

    • Must provide evidence of citizenship with either a birth certificate or passport

    • Must provide proof of identity using the following documents:

      • US Driver’s License

      • State issued non-driver ID card

      • US passport

    • If you do not have these documents, and cannot get a replacement within 10 days, social security will ask for other documents, such as: 

      • Employee ID card

      • School ID card

      • Health insurance (not medicare) card

      • US Military ID card

    • Must go in person to the local social security office. There are multiple social security offices in Cleveland. Visit this website to determine which is closest to you. Some of the locations in Cleveland include:

Note:

  • Photocopies of official documents are not accepted.

  • Can only use the same document for two purposes (EX: passport can be used for proof of citizenship and ID, but not age.)

CLAIMING YOUR GOVERNMENT COVID-19 ASSISTANCE CHECK

  • Do you have a tax filing requirement? If you are unsure, find out here.

    • If you have a filing requirement, you must file your 2019 tax return to receive payment. 

    • If you do not have a filing requirement, fill out information, and follow the directions listed on the IRS website linked here

Local Grants for Individuals/Businesses

  1. The National Development Council offers loans to small businesses affected by COVID-19. Call 216-303-7177 for assistance, or visit their COVID-19 resource website here.

  2. Ohio Works First (OWF) is the financial assistance portion of Ohio's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. Call  866-244-0071, (TTY/TDD 866-244-0071) to ask about cash assistance due to COVID-19.

  3. For older adults and families you can call 1-866-243-5678 to find locations of Agencies on Aging who can help provide financial resources.

  1. LEAP works with individuals with disabilities and older adults who are struggling financially to understand how to access government payouts via social security and healthcare. Visit this website for more details.
