FOOD RESOURCES

With the COVID-19 Pandemic affecting everyone's ability to get resources such as food and groceries, many local food banks and distributors are providing options for those in the Cleveland area.

FOOD BANKS

Cleveland Food Bank (CFB)

  • Call the help center at 216-738-2067 during operating hours M-F 7am-6pm if you have any questions .

  • The CFB can help you apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

    • This program provides temporary benefits such as money for groceries and food

    • You can also sign up for SNAP in person at 15500 S. Waterloo Rd, Cleveland OH, 44110.

    • Applying for SNAP requires you to fall at or below the following monthly income values:

      • $1,354 for 1 member in household

      • $1,832 for 2 members in household

      • $2,311 for 3 members in household

      • $2,790 for 4 members in household

      • $479 for each additional member of household

    • Members of SNAP are now allowed to use their electronic benefits cards to buy food online at Walmart and Amazon and have them delivered to your home.

Children's Hunger Alliance (CHA)

  • Specifically for children in the Cleveland Metro Area

  • The following includes the location and hours of the many centers that are providing this service. This is not, however, an entire list of centers that are participating in this program. 

    • Cleveland Central Rec Center (2526 Central Ave, Cleveland OH 44115). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Sterling Rec Center (1380 E 32nd St, Cleveland OH 44114). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Thurgood Marshall Rec Center (8611 Hough Ave, Cleveland OH 44106). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Cory Rec Center (10510 Drexel Ave, Cleveland OH 44108). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Glenville Rec center (680 E 113th St, Cleveland OH 44108). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Collinwood Rec Center (16300 Lakeshore Blvd, Cleveland OH 44110). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

    • Kenneth L. Johnson Rec Center (9206 Woodland Ave, Cleveland OH 44104). Hours of operation are M-F 4PM-5PM and Saturday 12PM-1PM.

Additional Information

  • Schools are also providing meals over the summer via the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) or the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).

    • This link is to a website showing an interactive map of all participating programs in Ohio. 

    • A link to all participating sites in Cuyahoga County is provided here, with data updated on 5/29/2020.

    • In the “Site Type” Column…

      • Open = all children ages 1-18 may receive a meal at these sites.

      • Restricted Open = children ages 1-18 may receive meals at these sites. The daily number of meals served at this location is capped (due to capacity constraints like using a vendor for meals).

      • Targeted Outreach = These sites are doing targeted outreach of meals. Households may contact the school or district for more information about meal service at these sites.

SAFE DELIVERY OF GROCERIES AND SHOPPING SAFELY

Grocery shopping is necessary, yet it can be a frightening experience in these times. We have listed several links for different safe delivery sites during this pandemic. You can use their websites to order your groceries from your local supermarket. Through these websites, someone will gather your groceries and deliver them to your house or apartment contactless. 

Shopping Safely

The following stores have special hours for the elderly or for people at higher risk. Please call your local stores to confirm these hours. 

  • Dollar General (first hour of every day)

  • Dave’s Supermarkets (7am-8am everyday)

  • Giant Eagle (6am-7am M-W)

  • Heinen’s (8am-9am everyday)

  • Target (first hour of operation every Wednesday)

  • Walmart (6am-7am every Tuesday)

  • Whole Foods (7:30am-8am everyday at Rocky River and University Heights Location)

  • In addition to the resources provided above, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has up-to-date guidelines on how to run essential errands. Information can be found at this link

EATING HEALTHY

  • Site #1: choosemyplate.gov

    • This resource has excellent resources on how to eat healthy during the pandemic.

    • This site also has linked resources such as Tips for Every Aisle

      • This site will help you create a budget-friendly shopping list that includes nutritious ingredients.

      • Along with budgeting, this site also includes advice like buying “in season” produce, and canned fruits which are just as nutritious and can cost less.

    • ChooseMyPlate includes an option to view sample 2-week menus

      • This site offers a variety of ways to eat healthy and within a reasonable budget by breaking down breakfast, lunch, and dinner options each day for a two week period using daily amounts recommended by each food group.

  • Site #2: Hungernetwork.org

    • The Hunger Network is Cuyahoga County's largest emergency food provider.

    • This site provides guidance on how to shop at grocery stores safely and provides recommendations for disinfectants.
